Methods: Observation and small study sessions. Observation opportunities include clinical practice settings with a focus on particular specialties and roles. When on-site at member hospitals of the Consortium of Harvard-Affiliated Nursing Services, participants are matched with clinical preceptors. Small study sessions are didactic and interactive, and enable participants to lead practice improvement initiatives when they return to their home countries. Study sessions are led by INHL International Nursing Studies faculty.
Content: Leadership development, collaborative relationships, quality improvement, and patient safety are emphasized, as they are in all INHL programs. Participants may focus on these issues within a speciality area, such as oncology, neurology, or neonatal and adult critical care services; or through the implementation of a particular role, such as advanced practice nurse, manager, or nurse educator.
Project planning. Nurse participants identify and create an implementation plan for a professional nursing project that will benefit patients, families and nurses in their home facilities. The project provides a structure for nurses to apply their new knowledge and influence change when they return to their healthcare institutions.
