Led by
Joan M. Vitello, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, FAHA, INHL Associate, these one-day workshops explored the concept of emotional intelligence, related research, and the role of emotional intelligence in healthcare leadership. Sessions were interactive and designed for groups of about 30 participants.

March 2002. Joan Vitello and workshop participants in Portland, Maine
Emotional Intelligence has had a lot of press as an ingredient for success. What determines a successful nurse or healthcare leader? Is it just his or her intellectual or clinical ability? Goleman and some others would say not. It is the blend of intellectual acumen along with emotional intelligence that determines a person's success in life.
What is emotional intelligence? How can emotional intelligence be measured? Can it be learned? How can we as healthcare leaders develop this form of intelligence? The workshop explored these and other questions.
